    Got a kid who loves being outside, getting a little messy, and learning cool, real-life skills? This is their day. Email kyle.keister@dcr.virginia.gov to get registered.

    Your kiddo(s) can join us for a fun 5 hour Junior Ranger Program at Westmoreland State Park that is packed with hands-on adventure, exploration, and ranger-led fun. Kids get to hang out and hike with real Park Rangers (which is pretty neat 😊) while learning everything from fishing and outdoor skills to a super fun solar cooking + burn ban basics session (yes… cooking without fire 🔥➡️☀️).

    They’ll also dive into Leave No Trace, Camping 101, and wrap up the day with a Junior Ranger Ceremony complete with Ranger Parker RedFox joining the celebration 🎉

    REEDVILLE -- The public is invited to tour the working menhaden vessel F/V Rappahannock 11 a.m.-3 p.m. May 16 at the Smith Building at the Morris-Fisher Stack, 610 Menhaden Road, Fleeton.

    Cost is $10 per person. The tour is sponsored by Ocean Harvesters/Omega Protein, with proceeds to benefit the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum.

    Wear flat, closed-toe shoes. Flip flops, slides and heels are not recommended.

    REEDVILLE -- The Reedville Fishermen's Museum will welcome the historic Chesapeake Bay skipjack Sigsbee to town June 17-18. For those two days there will be two renowned skipjacks in town, the Sigsbee and the museum's boat, Claud W. Somers.

    The Sigsbee will dock at the foot of Main Street at the Crazy Crab. The Sigsbee crew will offer deck tours and educational programs, free and open to the public. Hours to visit are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 17 and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 18.

    The museum, not usually open on Wednesdays, will be open that Wednesday, June 17, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., in addition to the usual Thursday-Saturday hours.

    Sigsbee was built in 1901 and dredged oysters commercially for 88 years. After she was acquired by the Living Classrooms Foundation in 1990, a team of shipwrights and students rebuilt her. Today she sails as a living classroom, teaching students about the ecology, history and economic importance of the Chesapeake Bay.

    Visitors to the Sigsbee are encouraged to visit the museum, home of the historic skipjack Claud W. Somers, built in 1911. A Somers volunteer crew member will be on hand at the museum's dock both days to talk about the vessel.

    The museum is at 504 Main St., Reedville. Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for seniors 65 and above; $5 for veterans; free for children 17 and under; and free for active duty military members. For information, call 804-453-6529 or e-mail office@rfmuseum.org.

  • Fourth Friday at Bay View May 22, 2026 Balls Neck Road, Balls Neck Rd, Virginia, USA

    Fourth Fridays at Bay View is a free gathering for visitors to Northern Neck Land Conservancy’s “ambassador property” in Northumberland County. 

    Bay View is a 220-acre landscape bordered on two sides by water. Many places on the property look just as they did when Indigenous people lived here. Monthly Fourth Friday afternoon gatherings allow visitors a chance to explore this beautiful location and learn about the importance of community conservation.

  • NNK Master Gardeners Shoreline Evaluation talk May 22, 2026  2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Reedville Fishermen's Museum, 504 Main St., Reedville

    REEDVILLE -- The Northern Neck Master Gardeners will present a talk about their Shoreline Evaluation Program at the Reedville Fishermen's Museum May 22.

    The program will start in the Watermen's Gallery at 2 p.m. A walk to the demonstration garden/living shoreline nearby will follow. After the tour, the museum board and docents will host an afternoon tea with light refreshments.

    The event is free and open to the public.

    The group's new exhibit is one of the museum's four new displays for 2026. It focuses on the shoreline problems that owners of waterfront property may experience and ways to address such concerns.

    Vegetation plays a major role in stormwater management and shoreline protection. The group maintains the demonstration garden as part of the museum. It is designed to manage stormwater runoff from the adjacent church building and parking area.

    More than 100 crafters, vendors and food trucks are expected again this year at the St. Stephen’s Strawberry Festival in Heathsville. The free, one-day festival on Saturday, May 23 2026 from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. is a Northern Neck tradition for the Memorial Day weekend. It is held rain or shine and is consistently rated one of the area’s best festivals.

     

    The spectacular line up of festivities draws 5,000 attendees and includes craft exhibitors and vendors selling handmade goods, homemade strawberry shortcake, a plant sale with hundreds of native plants at low prices, a bake sale, local strawberry sales, live music, kid’s activities, face painting, a strawberry boutique and bargains at the St. Stephens Thrift Shop.

     

    Each year church volunteers bake 1,300 homemade strawberry shortcakes and sell 1,000 quarts of fresh, local strawberries. 

     

    This is a fund-raising event as proceeds from the festival support various local non-profit organizations.

     

    The festival is on the grounds of the historic St. Stephen's Episcopal Church located at 6807 Northumberland Highway (Route 360) in the center of Heathsville, VA. Parking and admission are free.
