WALKING TOURS

Heathsville
Established as Northumberland County’s seat in 1681, Heathsville is the oldest seat of government in the Northern Neck of Virginia. Today, its historic district, running along Northumberland Highway (Hwy. 360), is centered at the Old County Courthouse, surrounded by antebellum plantation complexes. Follow the tour’s route by means of this online map.

BIRDING
Northern Neck Birding Trail
Running though the cradle of the nation’s birthplace, the 21-site Coastal Northern Neck Loop of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail features a wide diversity of songbirds, wading birds, waterfowl, bald eagles and butterflies in a multitude of habitats—salt and freshwater marshes, croplands and open fields.

CYCLING
Northern Neck Heritage Trail Bicyclingcycling Route

Enjoy the beauty of the Northern Neck by bicycle. Come ride past the fishing villages and historic sites of our uncluttered land. We’re slower down here, and we like it that way. You will, too. The Northern Neck trail is part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail (PHT). Four relatively easy bicycle trails are available to tour which represent the essence of the Northern Neck. Additional information on touring the Northern Neck by bicycle is available through the Potomac Heritage Explorer site. Enjoy and have a safe journey.

Below are some links to suggestions for bicycling trips, developed through a project to illustrate Northern Neck segments within the PHT corridor.

WATER TRAILS

The Virginia Department of Conservation & Recreation has created a Story Map that follows the scenic views along water trails in the Northern Neck Heritage Area.

The interactive map below provides an overview of various water trails developed with the assistance of the Northern Neck Planning District Commission. The map is not intended for navigational use. Please obtain NOAA navigational maps when planning your trip.
