Named
in honor of George Washington's mother, Mary. Visitors may tour
historical buildings, view exhibits on the region's history,
participate in educational programs, and trace family histories.
The complex includes the Old Clerk's office (c.1797), the Jail
(1821), Lancaster House (c.1840), and the Genealogy and History
Library. Open 10 am to 5 pm, Wednesday through Friday; Saturday,
10am to 3 pm, and Tuesday by appointment.

$5.00 p/day to use the library for non-members, free to members
– membership is $25 annually for individuals, $50 for families,
$100 sustaining.

Two
kinds of library holdings: strong genealogical collection and
a modest collection of general interest history books. An archives
collection is not open to the general public.
The
genealogy collection contains approximately 1,100 volumes regarding
the lower Northern Neck counties and Lancaster County as well
as many other Virginia counties. There are 2,200 non-circulating
general interest books. 1,200 family files focus on area
families, some going back to the 17th century.
Also, back issues of periodicals are available. Digital scanner/printer
for microfilm viewing.
Archives
housed in the old jail include records spanning three centuries,
especially the 19th. Records include family papers,
letters, working papers of past genealogists,
family tree charts, business records, local history manuscripts,
photographs, maps, maritime charts, and other documents.

African-American information: Actively collecting materials
in the Northern Neck and are currently involved in a major genealogical

The Library is housed in a 3-story building with the Westmoreland
County Museum and the combined library collections of the Museum
and the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Society. Library
is on the second floor. The building is conveniently close
to the old courthouse in Montross. On staff person is normally
available to assist.

The building
was completed in 1978 with the generous support of Mrs. Elsie
Ball Bowley in memory of her parents. It houses the Society’s
collections of books, manuscripts, and museum artifacts related
to the history of Northumberland County and its people, and
is made available for public use and study, as appropriate.
The ground floor of the library is devoted to research. It houses
reference books on historical and genealogical subjects, tombstone
records, family papers, church records, and microfilms of census
and other historical material related to Northumberland County
and neighboring counties of the Northern Neck. The first
and second floors feature items of historical interest.
The second floor also contains furniture with one room containing
items contributed by the Anderson family and many artifacts,
including medical memorabilia contributed primarily by Dr. James
Motley Booker, one of the Society’s founders and president for
fifteen years.

is $15.00 for individuals, $20 for joint membership.

The Jessie Ball duPont Memorial Library was
built in 1980 with a grant from the
duPont Fund. Primarily a research facility, the building is
also used for meetings, receptions, lectures, and seminars.
Its collections include rare books, manuscripts, photographs,
books, periodicals, and archived records of the Robert E. Lee
Memorial Association. The collections are accessible for research
by appointment.
